Cooking education nonprofit

Learn to cook the meals you want to eat.

Our mission: teach practical home cooking and recipe literacy so families can cook nourishing meals with confidence.

YummyWorks is a cooking-education organization in West Palm Beach, Florida. We teach real recipes, kitchen skills, and grocery know-how — not restaurant dining, meal kits, or a food store.

YummyWorks cooking class in West Palm Beach

About YummyWorks

A teaching kitchen for everyday cooks.

YummyWorks exists because many people want to cook at home and were never shown how. A recipe on a screen is not the same as standing at a counter with an instructor, a cutting board, and a plan for dinner.

We work from West Palm Beach. Classes are built around ordinary kitchens: one pan, a short shopping list, and methods you can repeat on a weeknight. We serve adults, families, and young people who want practical food skills — including neighbors who find grocery prices and recipe jargon confusing.

Mission

Teach practical home cooking and recipe literacy so families can cook nourishing meals with confidence.

Activities include community cooking classes, family recipe literacy workshops, beginner kitchen-skills sessions, seasonal produce lessons, youth cooking education, and a volunteer teaching kitchen. YummyWorks is not a restaurant, grocery, or meal-kit shop. Any support we receive goes toward teaching, ingredients for classes, and keeping programs accessible.

What we offer

Service

Six education programs — classes, skills, and volunteer teaching — all focused on cooking at home.

Adults cooking together in a community kitchen class

Community cooking classes

Small-group lessons in a teaching kitchen. We cook a complete meal together, then send you home with the recipe card, the method, and the confidence to repeat it.

Family reading a recipe card together at a kitchen counter

Family recipe literacy

Parents and caregivers learn how to read a recipe, shop from a short list, and turn what is already in the cupboard into dinner without guesswork.

Instructor teaching beginner knife skills on a cutting board

Beginner kitchen skills

Knife safety, heat control, seasoning, and clean-as-you-go habits. These sessions are for adults who want a calm, practical start in the kitchen.

Colorful seasonal vegetables prepared for a cooking lesson

Seasonal produce cooking

Florida fruit and vegetables change through the year. We teach simple methods—roast, simmer, sauté—so seasonal produce becomes familiar meals.

Young people learning to cook with an adult instructor

Youth cooking education

Age-appropriate lessons for young people: washing produce, measuring, following steps, and sitting down to a meal they helped make.

Volunteers preparing food in a nonprofit teaching kitchen

Volunteer teaching kitchen

Home cooks, culinary students, and retired chefs can assist classes, prep produce, and help us keep lessons free or low-barrier for families who need them.

Learn by cooking

Three teaching recipes

Original lesson recipes we use in class. Each one teaches a kitchen skill you can reuse, not a restaurant trick.

Sheet-pan citrus chicken and vegetables
Skill: one-pan roasting

Sheet-pan citrus chicken

Chicken thighs, orange, onion, and mixed vegetables roast together on one pan. You learn even heat, spacing, and when the chicken is cooked through — 165°F in the thickest part.

  • 4 bone-in chicken thighs, patted dry
  • 1 orange, sliced; 1 onion, wedges
  • Broccoli florets or bell pepper strips
  • Olive oil, salt, pepper, dried thyme

Heat the oven to 425°F. Toss vegetables and orange with oil and salt. Place chicken on top, skin side up. Roast 35–40 minutes until the juices run clear. Rest 5 minutes before serving with the pan juices.

Herb white beans on toast
Skill: pantry cooking

Herb white beans on toast

A can of beans becomes dinner when you know how to warm, season, and finish with acid. This lesson is about reading labels, rinsing, and tasting as you go.

  • 1 can white beans, rinsed
  • Garlic, olive oil, lemon, parsley
  • Red pepper flakes, salt
  • Toasted whole-grain bread

Warm oil and garlic on medium heat — do not brown the garlic. Add beans, a splash of water, salt, and pepper flakes. Mash a few beans so the sauce thickens. Finish with lemon and parsley. Spoon over toast.

Weeknight tomato garlic pasta
Skill: boiling and sauce timing

Weeknight tomato garlic pasta

Salted water, a can of tomatoes, and garlic become a complete plate. Students learn pasta doneness, saving cooking water, and balancing acidity with a pinch of sugar only if the tomatoes taste sharp.

  • 12 oz dried pasta
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • Garlic, olive oil, basil or dried oregano
  • Salt, black pepper, optional grated cheese

Boil pasta in well-salted water. In a wide pan, cook garlic in oil, add tomatoes, and simmer 10 minutes. Stir in a ladle of pasta water, then the drained pasta. Taste for salt. Serve immediately.
